Botox

Botulinum toxin, (a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium), most commonly referred to by its product name BOTOX®, is a popular non-surgical, doctor-administered treatment, that can temporarily reduce or eliminate frown lines, forehead creases, crows feet near the eyes and thick bands in the neck.

BOTOX® Cosmetic was approved by the FDA in 2002 and for the past four years in a row, has ranked as both the most popular doctor-administered aesthetic procedure in the U.S., as well as one of the lowest entry-cost facial procedures.

Planning your treatment

BOTOX® is indicated for the temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe glabellar (frown) lines associated with corrugator and/or procerus muscle activity in adult patients aged

BOTOX® injections are a temporary solution for the treatment of wrinkles. The effects last from 4-6 months and require repeat treatments.

Your treatment

To begin the procedure, your face will be cleansed, usually with an alcohol-based cleanser. No anesthesia is required, although your doctor may choose to numb the area with a topical anesthetic or cold pack.

The patient is asked to contract the muscles in the area being treated so the Doctor can determine the proper location to administer the injections. The procedure takes approximately 10 minutes, depending upon the number of desired treatment areas.

A tiny needle is used to inject very small amounts of BOTOX® Cosmetic directly into the underlying facial muscles. BOTOX® Cosmetic blocks the transmission of nerve impulses (signals) to the injected muscles to temporarily weaken and paralyze the muscles that cause wrinkles. The results of BOTOX® Cosmetic give the skin a smoother, more youthful appearance. Studies have also suggested that BOTOX® Cosmetic is effective in relieving migraine headaches, excessive sweating and muscle spasms in the neck and eyes.

A chemical called acetylcholine must travel from a nerve ending to a muscle, causing the muscle to contract, which over time cause wrinkle lines to form. After BOTOX® Cosmetic is injected into the treatment area it enters the nerve and binds (sticks) to the nerve ending. The release of acetylcholine is then blocked, making the muscle unable to contract and temporarily paralyzing the muscle to a relaxed (unwrinkled) state.

Post treatment care

No downtime. Patients can immediately resume normal activities.

Risk of complications

Side effects are generally minor, temporary, and typically associated with the injections themselves. Local numbness, swelling, bruising, or a burning sensation during injection could occur around the injection site. A temporary headache is not uncommon after injections in the forehead area, especially after the first treatment. The most common side effects following injection include temporary eyelid droop and nausea. All of these possible effects are mild..
