Risk and complications
Like in any surgery performed, complications could include bleeding and/or infection. A reaction to the anesthesia is uncommon. The breast procedure does leave noticeable permanent scars that thru time will be less visible. Future breast feeding will be possible, since the surgery doesn't remove the milk ducts leading to the nipples. Some patients may experience a reduction or loss of feeling in their nipples and breast skin, caused by the swelling after the surgery. This usually fades over the next six weeks or so.
Your initial consultation
It’s important to discuss your expectations with honesty so that the Doctor can give you his professional advice. He will examine and measure your breasts, describe the procedure in detail, explain the probable results as well as the risks, limitations and scarring that may result. Pictures are used for reference during surgery and afterwards for comparison.
Your Sugery
Breast Lift surgery usually takes one and a half to three hours. It is performed under general anesthesia or epidural anesthesia (childbirth). The procedure removes excess of skin, and moves the nipple and areola into their new position. Then the skin is brought from both sides of the breast down and around the areola, shaping the new contour of the breast. Another procedure is the periareolar incision, in which a circular incision is made around the areola, without the vertical and horizontal incision. If you’re having an implant inserted along with your breast lift, it will be placed in a pocket directly under the breast tissue, or deeper, under the muscle of the chest wall. Most of the patients are discharged the same day.
After your surgery
You’ll be wrapped in an elastic bandage or a surgical bra over gauze dressing. You may feel some pain for the first couple of days, but the Doctor will prescribe medication to lessen the pain.
